Team 'Bio-Informed'

Mission

Turning biodiversity data into knowledge for research, policy, and action.

Team's activities

Bio-Informed (Biodiversity Information for Research and Decision-making) is a team within Meise Botanic Garden in Belgium that focuses on making plant and fungal biodiversity data usable, trustworthy, and impactful.

The team operates at the intersection of biodiversity science and informatics, transforming raw botanical and ecological data into structured, interoperable digital resources. A central goal is to digitise, enrich, standardise, and share collection and biodiversity data in FAIR and open science ways, improving access to both digital and physical collections.

Bio-Informed aims to get more value out of existing collections and data by developing and maintaining digital tools, workflows, and analyses. These support research on plants and ecosystems, help explore future trends, and ensure data is actively used in science, policy, management, and reporting rather than only archived.

Another key objective is to turn biodiversity data into actionable knowledge for policy and society. By integrating data from multiple sources, the team contributes to answering real-world questions on biodiversity loss, invasive species, and One Health through transparent and reproducible approaches.

Finally, Bio-Informed fosters collaboration and curiosity by engaging with citizen scientists and expert networks, communicating beyond specialist audiences, and contributing to innovation in biodiversity informatics. The team continuously works to connect data, people, and ideas to support evidence-based decision-making.
