Walk The plant family tree

From natural classification to the current plant family tree

Some 400,000 plant species exist. Since the ancient Greeks, scientists have been trying to create structure in that multitude by classifying species into orderly systems. Botanic gardens create and maintain gardens based on such systems.

In Meise Botanic Garden, several such 'systematic gardens' have been planted over the years. Together, they cover almost 10 hectares. They are arranged according to the classifications of their time. Even though they are sometimes scientifically outdated, they remain historically valuable.

During this walk, we will introduce our systematic gardens to you. Discover the austere Cronquist Garden and the winding Dahlgren Arboretum. Walk past the impressive conifers. Get to know our oak collection, and don't miss the Rose Garden: it is arranged according to the very latest scientific knowledge.
