Saving for posterity
In the seed bank of the Botanic Garden, we preserve the seeds of rare and endangered flowering plants from Belgium, endangered species of the copper flora from Katanga (Democratic Republic of the Congo), and wild relatives of beans and bananas.
The Botanic Garden also keeps the seeds of its own collection of living plants. These seeds serve as a backup for our plant collection. We also exchange them with other botanic gardens and scientific institutions around the world. Every year we provide our seed list (Index Seminum) to a network of 600 correspondents. Together we strive to conserve endangered plant species.
