[Science News] - New! Field Guide: The Lichens of Flanders and Brussels
The first lichens flora for Flanders and Brussels (Brussels‑Capital Region) has just come off the press! This new field guide - in Dutch - is intended for both beginner enthusiasts and seasoned specialists. It presents 537 species: 455 lichens, 72 lichenicolous fungi, and 10 non‑lichenised fungi. With photographs, distribution maps, ecological data, morphological descriptions, chemical reactions, and comparisons with related species, the book offers a clear overview of the species found in Flanders and Brussels.
Identification keys lead to the correct determination of lichens, from macroscopic features down to microscopic details. For certain species, microscopic observations are essential to reach an accurate identification.
The authors of this guide are two lichenologists from Meise Botanic Garden: Dries Van den Broeck and Damien Ertz. At the end of the book, readers will find an impressive list of recently discovered species: 15 lichens, 15 lichenicolous fungi, and 5 non‑lichenised fungi. One thing is clear: the world of lichens still holds an incredible wealth waiting to be explored. This book is therefore an invitation to all nature lovers to head out into the field and delve into the study of these fascinating organisms.
