Annual Report 2022

Meise Botanic Garden has just published its annual report 2022, which highlights the latest achievements and the celebration of its 225th anniversary. Since its establishment in 1797 as a small garden associated with the central school of the Dyle department in Brussels, the Garden has undergone many changes, including its move to the northern part of the city and then to Meise. 

Throughout its history, plant education, plant conservation and botanical research have played a central role in the Garden's mission. To celebrate its 225th anniversary, several events were organized, such as an exhibition on the Garden's past, national and international meetings, and a staff party with a 'golden touch'. The scientists working in the Botanic Garden were also very productive in 2022, describing 100 species still unknown to science, thus helping to document the planet's biodiversity.

The Botanic Garden has also managed to secure external funding for four projects funded by the European Commission, of which it will lead one. In addition, the master plan is gradually taking shape, with the ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045. In 2022, the inauguration of the Island Garden was another milestone. With its unique architecture, it will soon house a large collection of aquatic and riparian plants, including several endangered ones.

Overall, 2022 was an exceptional year for the Botanic Garden, marking 225 years of existence. The achievements of the past year would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and commitment of the entire Botanic Garden community.
